How It Works

Enter your numbers.
Get a decision, not just a result.

Every CalStack calculator gives you your number and tells you what it means with industry benchmarks so you know whether to act or not.

Three steps, no account needed

Every calculator on CalStack follows the same pattern. No signup, no paywall, no waiting.

01

Choose your calculator

Browse by industry or search by keyword. Every calculator is built for a specific use case such as food cost, break-even, labor cost, or menu pricing rather than generic formulas that apply to everything and nothing.

02

Enter your numbers

Input your actual figures including costs, revenue, and targets. Select your restaurant type, business category, or operating model where relevant. The calculator adjusts benchmarks to match your specific context, not the industry average.

03

Read your result in context

Your result appears instantly alongside the benchmark range for your category. You see whether you are healthy, in a warning zone, or in a critical position and exactly how far you are from the target.

What makes CalStack different

Most calculators give you a number. CalStack gives you a decision. The difference is the benchmark layer. Knowing your food cost is 34% means nothing on its own. Knowing 34% is healthy for casual dining but critical for fine dining tells you what to do next.

Every benchmark is sourced from primary industry bodies including the National Restaurant Association, the Uniform System of Accounts for Restaurants, Cornell University's Center for Hospitality Research, and equivalent authorities for each industry category. Sources are cited on every calculator page.

How to read your benchmark status

Every result includes a benchmark bar and a status indicator. Here is what each status means:

🟢

Healthy

Your result is within the target range for your industry type. No immediate action required.

🟡

Warning

Your result is above the healthy range. A signal to investigate and review the levers in the calculator article.

🔴

Action Required

Your result is critically outside the healthy range. This typically means the business is losing money in this area.

What is included with every calculator

Every calculator page is built to the same standard. You always get:

  • Instant result — calculation updates as you type, no submit button needed
  • Benchmark comparison — your result vs the healthy range for your specific type
  • Savings potential — exactly how much you recover by hitting your target
  • Period switching — toggle between weekly, monthly, and annual views
  • Sourced article — explanation of the formula, benchmarks by type, and how to improve
  • Related calculators — the next tools relevant to your situation
