How stair geometry works

A staircase has three geometric dimensions that are mathematically linked: total rise (vertical height), total run (horizontal footprint), and stringer length (the diagonal). Changing any one changes all three. The goal is to find a riser count that divides the total rise into equal increments within IRC limits — then calculate the run and stringer length from that.

Stair Geometry Formulas

Risers = round(total_rise ÷ target_riser)
Exact riser = total_rise ÷ riser_count
Total run = (risers − 1) × tread_depth
Stringer = √(total_rise² + total_run²)

There is always one fewer tread than there are risers — the deck surface itself serves as the top tread. A 54-inch-tall deck with 8 risers has 7 treads. With 11-inch treads: total run = 7 × 11 = 77 inches (6 feet 5 inches). The stringer length = √(54² + 77²) = √(2916 + 5929) = √8845 = 94 inches. Order 2×12 stringers at the next standard length above 94 inches — 10 feet (120 inches) provides adequate length for the cuts. IRC Section R311.7 governs stairway construction in residential buildings. These are the hard limits checked by this calculator on every input change.

The 3/8-inch maximum variation between risers is the most frequently violated code requirement on site-built stairs. When a builder measures the total rise incorrectly — miscounting the deck decking thickness, for example — the actual first or last riser may be taller or shorter than the others by more than 3/8 inch. This is a tripping hazard and a common fail point at final inspection. Measure the total rise precisely from deck surface to landing pad surface before cutting any stringers. The 24-inch deck height case produces an 8.0-inch riser at 3 risers — which exceeds the 7.75-inch IRC maximum. This calculator will flag that condition automatically. Stringer sizing and throat depth

Stringers carry the full load of the staircase and must maintain an adequate cross-section at the narrowest point — the throat — which is the remaining wood depth below the deepest notch. IRC R311.7.6 requires a minimum 3.5-inch throat depth on notched stringers. This is why 2×12 is the standard stringer material: it provides the depth to notch a 7-inch rise and 10-inch run and still have 3.5–4 inches of solid wood remaining.

To verify throat depth: after marking the rise and run on the stringer face, measure the perpendicular distance from the deepest point of the notch to the opposite face of the stringer. For a 2×12 (actual depth 11.25 inches) with a 7-inch rise notch and 10-inch run notch, the throat depth is approximately 11.25 − √(7² + 10²) = 11.25 − 12.2 = −0.95 — this shows the geometry comes very close to the board edge. In practice, 2×12 stringers with a 7-inch riser and 10-inch tread barely meet the 3.5-inch throat requirement. Moving to a 6.5-inch riser or an 11-inch tread depth increases throat depth to a more comfortable margin.

Tread construction options

The most common residential deck tread construction is two 2×6 PT boards with a 0.25-inch gap, giving 11.25 inches of tread depth — slightly above the 11-inch nominal. This combination is code-compliant, inexpensive, and matches the decking material for a consistent appearance. One 5/4×6 board alone gives only 5.5 inches, which is too narrow for a single-board tread without a nosing extension.

Alternatives include a single 2×12 tread for a clean look on premium decks, composite tread boards for low-maintenance installations, or stone and concrete treads for an integrated hardscape connection at the base. Whatever material is used, the 10-inch minimum tread depth is measured from nosing to nosing, not from the riser face to the front of the tread board.

Landing requirements

IRC R311.7.6 requires a landing at both the top and bottom of a stairway. The landing must be at least as wide as the stairway and at least 36 inches in the direction of travel. For a deck stair, the top landing is the deck surface itself — the deck just needs to extend at least 36 inches from the stair opening in the direction you walk before you reach the deck edge. The bottom landing must be a stable, non-settling surface — concrete is the standard solution. Measure your total rise to the top of the finished concrete pad, not to grade.

What is the maximum riser height for deck stairs under IRC?

IRC Section R311.7.5.1 sets the maximum riser height at 7-3/4 inches (7.75 inches). The minimum is 4 inches. How many stringers does a deck staircase need?

IRC requires at least 3 stringers for stair widths over 36 inches. For a standard 36-inch-wide staircase, 3 stringers is the minimum — one at each side and one centred. For widths over 48 inches, add a stringer every 16 inches of additional width. This calculator outputs the correct stringer count for your selected width automatically.

What lumber is used for deck stair stringers?

Stringers are cut from 2x12 pressure-treated Southern Pine or Douglas Fir. The 2x12 (actual 1.5 x 11.25 inches) provides sufficient depth to notch the rise and run while retaining at least 3.5 inches of solid throat depth as required by IRC R311.7.6. A 2x10 is not adequate for most riser and tread combinations because the throat depth falls below the minimum after notching.

What is the 7-11 rule for stairs?

The 7-11 rule is a rule of thumb: riser height of 7 inches and tread depth of 11 inches. The sum of one riser plus one tread should fall between 17 and 18 inches for comfortable gait. A 7-inch riser plus 11-inch tread equals 18 — the comfortable upper limit. Does the deck stair landing need concrete?

IRC R311.7.6 requires a landing at least 36 inches deep in the direction of travel at the bottom of exterior stairs. The surface must be stable and not subject to shifting. A concrete pad is the standard code-compliant solution. Measure total rise from deck surface to the top of the finished concrete pad — not to grade.
