A sloped roof covers significantly more area than the flat building footprint beneath it. The difference is determined entirely by the roof’s pitch. A 6:12 pitch adds 11.8% more surface area than the flat plan view. A 12:12 pitch adds 41.4%. Failing to apply this pitch multiplier is the most common reason DIY material orders come up short.

Step 1: Adjusted Footprint
Aadj = (Building Length + 2 × Rake Overhang) × (Building Width + 2 × Eave Overhang)
Step 2: True Sloped Area
Asloped = Aadj × √(1 + (Pitch ÷ 12)²)

Squares = Asloped ÷ 100
Worked example. Building is 40 ft long, 30 ft wide, with 12-inch eave overhangs and 12-inch rake overhangs, at a 6:12 pitch. Adjusted footprint: (40 + 2) × (30 + 2) = 42 × 32 = 1,344 sq ft. Pitch multiplier at 6:12: √(1 + 0.25) = 1.118. True sloped area: 1,344 × 1.118 = 1,502.6 sq ft. Roofing squares: 1,502.6 ÷ 100 = 15.03 squares. With 10% waste: order materials for 16.5 squares (17 squares to the nearest whole unit).
Why overhangs matter
Overhangs extend the roof deck beyond the building walls. They are part of the roofing surface and must be included in every material order. Eave overhangs (at the low edge) add to the width dimension. Rake overhangs (at the gable ends) add to the length dimension. Standard residential overhangs run 12 to 24 inches. Missing them typically understates material by 8 to 15 percent.
